Design is an experiment — an experiment in boundary pushing. As we design, we test hypotheses about achieving desired outcomes for our users. Sometimes we encounter failed experiments - sometimes over and over again. But those failures are necessary. They lead us to the good, impactful designs that add value and delight to people’s lives.

The Public Art Project

The Public Art Project is a curated digital art collection addressing current issues and events. The installations will utilize projection mapping to create large-scale engaging experiences for viewers. The works will be displayed in various locations to create a large impact and incite discussions. The locations may include apartment buildings, historical sites, city blocks, and existing sculptures/works of art. The digital artwork will be dynamic, and ever-changing. Every month, a new hashtag will be chosen and displayed as a prompt for new artwork submissions. Artists will submit samples through social media using the hashtag in the caption of their post, and they will fill out a submission form to formally submit their design to The Public Art Project.

The submission form will take only a couple of minutes to complete and will ask for some personal information, social media handles, and a title and description of the artist’s submission. One artist will be chosen to be featured on-site every month. They will work with The Public Art Project to create a projection-mapped piece inspired by their submission. Then, the cycle will start over with a new hashtag, location, and artist submissions.

Project Process Book

The Public Art Project is not yet a fully completed project. I am happy with where this project is headed, but there is still work to be done before I will consider it complete. If I continue pursuing this project next semester, I plan to create a content calendar including where The Public Art Project will be located and what the hashtags will be at each location and time. I would also like to create a scale model of an installation and work out what the installation setup will look like. I would also like to dive deeper into equipment costs and mapping out the experience of the user at the installation locations.
