Ava Raterman

Undergraduate

I am driven to be an extension of nature's toolbox, designing with and for the environment. Risks don't scare me, and I believe I design with that mindset. My most prominent skills are building with my hands, but I am learning the key 2D skills of industrial design. I have an affinity for organic, serene designs. My management and interpersonal skills allow me to work well with my peers and mentors. I am confident about what I want, yet I keep an open mind to other's ideas. My ability to adapt to my environment and face challenges headfirst has really proven itself this year. While I take my work seriously, I like to stay free flowing and playful which is shown through my designs.

Design Movement Project

Design Movement Project

Research Teammates: Hannah Wittenstein, Sidney Swanstrom, Uzoma Offor
Product design: Solo
Class: ID 1101  | Instructor: Kevin Shankwiler

The third studio project was our introduction to CAD modeling and branding. We researched a design movement, our team was assigned Mid-Century Modernism. We also created a brand name, logo, and philosophy which broadened our design skills. I am now exposed to rendering and photoshopping rendered images into a realistic setting. I really enjoyed the relationship with the product in conjunction with my brand aesthetic.

Pepper Grinder Project

Pepper Grinder Project

Project two was intensive on proportional analysis and hierarchy. I used Adobe Illustrator to create a Pepper grinder with circle unit proportions. A classmate and I also did a texture study from our environment to decode and encode a texture for our product. Using foam core, I created a ribs & stringers model to communicate my product in 3D.

Project one was focused on ergonomics and form development. With a team, we researched an existing tool handle to redesign. Using modeling clay we tested our handle for comfort and usability. I did two significant redesigns after receiving feedback from users. I really enjoyed modeling with clay in this project because I have a lot of experience with clay.
