DASH

Say hello to your next personal scooter: Dash is an electric scooter designed to provide a thrilling and reliable riding experience to people living in urban areas. Its key feature is its innovative collapsing mechanism. When riders get to their destination, Dash folds vertically and its two retractable legs allows it to stand up on its own. The retracting legs include wheels, which let the uses roll Dash from place to place, simplifying transport. This also results in a 6x smaller folded footprint than competitors, making it effortless to store in a small apartment or next to your desk at work.
The scooter also features advanced smartphone integration. With Dash, your phone becomes an NFC key for your scooter, completely securing it from theft whenever you are not riding. While riding, it not only charges your phone wirelessly, but also utilizes it as a dashboard. In addition to speed, range and battery life, riders can also tailor the dashboard to include music controls, maps, detailed ride stats and more. This integration gives the rider ultimate control of their riding experience.
Dash’s airless tires provide natural suspension for a smooth ride that will never end in a flat tire. 3M Scotch-lite panels wrap Dash from every angle, guaranteeing that drivers and other cyclists can see you day or night. Dash is truly a scooter that can take you anywhere and be taken everywhere.
Since its inception in 1980, the Sedigraph has maintained the same engineered form factor, which, while proven, has become unrefined, unintuitive, and no longer celebrates the advanced technology housed within.
The scope of this project included redesigning the exterior package of the device as well as user interface components, while working within the constraints of the sheet metal manufacturing processes currently available to Micromeritics. Redesign of the internal technology was outside of the scope.
The Sedigraph IV is a radical departure from the previous versions of the device. It retains the technological DNA of its predecessors but incorporates numerous improvements all oriented to streamline manufacturing and assembly and enhance the user experience of the device during regular use and maintenance. These improvements include a completely overhauled pumping arrangement, upgraded accessibility to crucial components of the device, and a simpler, more intuitive user interface.
Alongside these functional upgrades, the form of the device was also simplified. By removing extraneous material and applying a fresh and contemporary brand language, we were able to make the device more approachable while better representing the advanced capabilities housed within. Its form factor sees a significant reduction in footprint size and overall volume, which frees up crucial lab space around the device. The interlocking shell design also makes the device highly serviceable and repairable, extending its operational lifespan.
These improvements result in a device that visually distinctive in the lab, is friendly to interact with, and can be instantly recognizable as a Micromeritics instrument.
LIFTOFF
Class: Sophomore Studio II | Instructor: Herb Velazquez
Lift-Off is a 6’5” metal floor lamp designed living rooms. It is constructed out of over 100 individual parts, most of them hand fabricated out of 3003 aluminum and stainless steel. The design takes inspiration from jet engine nozzles. Much like how nozzles can be opened and closed to achieve different amounts of thrust, Lift-Off allows the user to redirect its light by articulating the linked petals up or down. It was designed to celebrate the dynamism of common spaces and seamlessly adapts to any space, mood, or situation.
