Research Resources

Research Resources

Both the school of industrial design and the institute provide substantial resources to aid students in their work. Being a research institute, one of the most developed and exhausted resources are research resources. This page provides links and information for tools that designs students will find invaluable as they learn and develop their work. Please note that all of these resources are completely free and in place specifically to aid students, so take advantage of them!

Library Resources

A basic but powerful tool for design students is the library. The Georgia Tech Library database can search books, articles, and journals for your specific topic, many of which are available instantly online. This is one of the most accessible resources for research.
The library also provides research guides for a wide variety of topics. There is one specifically for industrial design, which can be found below.
The library staff is always available (24/7) to aid students, and there is a chat feature on the library page that will allow you to get immediate assistance. If you feel your subject needs more expert or direct attention, you can request a library consultation to have a librarian work personally with you on your topic.

Archive Resources

The Georgia Tech Archives is an excellent resource. Not only do the archives hold old tech documents, but also take in donations from alumni and professionals. While the process of requesting archival materials is slightly different from other search engines, there is a video that demonstrates how to request archival material. Note that the archival search function must be specified to digital material (photos and audio recordings), collection descriptions (whole collections of documents), SMARTech (school released documents and images), and GT Publications (Tech publications such as the Technique).
The archive staff is available to assist students and can be contacted for assistance.

Databases

Georgia Tech provides students with access to over 550 databases. This means students have a wide range of access to professional research. Please note that when accessing these databases, you need to search them through the library website, and use the link from the search to access the database. This allows the database to recognize you as a Georgia Tech student. Accessing them from an outside search engine will likely cause issues with accessing material.
Some of the most useful databases for design students are— Statista, which provides statistics on a wide range of topics, JSTOR, which provides access to more than 12 million academic journal articles, and Material ConneXion, which provides detailed material descriptions for a wide range of materials.

Information about the industrial design librarian

In addition to the various librarians available to assist students, Catherine Manci is the designated research librarian for the school of industrial design. Her contact information is displayed above.

Design Library

Separate from the library books housed at Emory, the school of design has its own library. Previously housed in the College of Design west building, the core materials most used by students, faculty and staff are still accessible while permanent housing for the entire collection is being determined. The materials are currently located in Hinman 208.

Professors

Many professors for the school specialize in a specific field, and are excellent resources if you are looking for guidance in specific areas. Due to their busy schedules, some professors may be unable to give quick responses. This should be taken into consideration when contacting professors for assistance. A detailed list of professors and their specializations can be found under personnel resources.
