Allie Paschal

Undergraduate

Hi! My name is Allie Paschal, and I am a fourth-year GTID student, graduating in Spring 2021. This past semester, I chose to take Senior Capstone Studio with Roger Ball, Adv. Graphic Design with Lisa Babb, and Adv. Immersive Environments with Prof. Purdy- projects are shown in my profile in addition to past semester's work. Though this particular semester was a challenge given everything was virtual, I am very happy with my final project deliverables!

For my Senior Studio project, I chose to research semi-truck driving and why women only make up less than 7% of the gender composition of the industry. Come to find out, the very beginning stages of the trucking job process from the application to the required job training tend to ostracize women from even thinking about applying for the job. Even if they do, many trucking training centers do not offer safe, cost-effective, or supportive environments for women to obtain this education. That's why I developed this business start-up, 18 Wheelin' Women, a trucking recruiting and training center ONLY for women. The start-up's primary goal is to allow more women to enter and thrive in this particular blue-collar job field, because our steering wheel sees no gender.

For Adv. Graphic Design, I extended my in-depth studio research on women and truck driving to develop another project. If these trucking women are able to go past the job application and training stages for the job, more barriers exist that may prevent job retention rate. One of these barriers is sleeping safely at truck pit stops. In response, I created Mother Trucker, a mobile phone app that monitors the daily driving cap limit of 11 hours, and suggests high-rated and safe pit stops to these women truckers once they are within 30 minutes are their driving limit. This app relies on ratings from other Mother Trucker users, and highly recommends every user give their reviews after their nightly pit stop. Mother Trucker is specifically designed for women who are aged 49-52 years old, and have recently chosen the job of trucking to get out of the house for employment opportunities.

For Adv. Immersive Environments, we completed multiple projects throughout the semester, but the one shown was my favorite to complete! We were asked to use V-RED Pro to develop a scene in virtual reality that you could also interact with. I created my scene using a 3D-modeled bike from the Junior Product Development Studio completed by my groupmates, Josh Chan and John Lyons. Within this scene, you can use the shown podium to change the scene environment, the bike's material and color, the bike's scale, in addition to playing two animations showing the bike's movement and seat adjustment.

Class: ID 3042  |  Instructor: Kevin Shankwiler

In this project, my group designed an environment for the Pulse Bike within the Junior Studio. We focused on what would entice our targeted consumer to enter our store and space, as well as what would showcase the bike and its features the best. Within our environment, we included many features such as branding in the overall visuals, a juice bar, an immersive environment, a customization station, etc. Our main design objective in our spatial design was to market trial to our consumers.

For this project, I created a customization storage system for underneath bathroom sinks. I saw much design opportunity when doing initial research on general storage, and looking at what was currently on the market for bathroom sink storage. I noticed many storage units do not optimize the sink space available, and do not account for the pipe-work that is underneath sinks. I focused on customization so consumers with differing sink dimensions as well as what he/she stores, could personalize the storage system to their needs and limitations.

For advanced digital rendering, we were given many assignments throughout the semester, including a flashlight series, a vase, an exploded view, etc. I chose to showcase some of my favorite pieces of work from the semester. I really enjoyed how this class pushed my rendering skills, and helped me better my overall Photoshop and concept composition skills. This class helped in the many ways you can display your sketch and drawing concepts to potential clients and work colleagues for the future.
