Lamp Project
Class: ID 2024 | Instructor: Steve Chininis
For the first project of the year that I worked on, we had to design a centerpiece lamp for a specific environment. I played around with a brunch of ideas and wound up making a lamp that would fit in a more urban club or bar style area. It is my first time working with metal, water jet cutting material, and using a CNC. I also got more practice with wood finishing. I was really happy with the end result and how many different things I got to learn from one project.

I created a product that helps train people to not touch their face. Originally this project was focused around people biting their nails, but with the COVID-19 epidemic I pivoted and adapted it to be something entirely different. It uses 6 Degree of freedom tracking chips and Bluetooth to communicate with the users phone and keep track of data and progression. This allows users to be alerted when they’re touching their face in a discrete way to help decrease that motion, but not hinder or embarrass the user. This is the first time I got to make a website and a project where I got to show off my rendering skills! The website I made is https://matthewfarleo.myportfolio.com.

For this project we had to design a smart product that uses sensors and has a clearly defined input and output. My group designed a children's toy for teaching kids the basics of music! Using a photosensor the child could hover the device over a color and it plays a certain note based on said color. This allows for the development of creative minds! I got to practice a lot with coding this project and learn a lot about different sensors that I am capable of applying to my products in the future.
